Yesterday evening the MD crew hit the town decked out in beautiful Christmas attire. We had a great time at Moggers and enjoyed some great food, drinks, and festive holiday sweaters.

Sycamore Sam 3D
Psychology Professor Brad Brubaker came to us with the idea to translate this dragon 3d illusion into our very own mascot, Sycamore Sam. After some trial and error, this is what we came up with!
You can't tell from the picture, but the face actually folds inwards. Our eyes are tricked into seeing the face in its true shape. When you move back and forth, Sam follows you!
Print out the image to try it yourself!! Don't worry if it takes a couple seconds to see the illusion. I found that covering one eye with my hand and moving side to side works the best for me to see the 3d Sycamore Sam illusion.

So The Journey Begins...
Greetings!
Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Natalie, and the newest addition to the Multimedia Design crew at CIRT. I'm very excited to begin my journey at CIRT as a graduate assistant. After working as a designer in a print environment for three years, I decided to take a chance and apply to graduate programs. After applying to a handful of MFA programs, I was accepted into the MFA program in Graphic Design here at Indiana State University. So, here I am! I'd like to give a shout out to Sarah and Matt for inviting me to join the CIRT design team. Look for more posts from me in the future regarding projects and things going on here at CIRT.
Rather than quote my resume to you, or take the risk of this introduction sounding like an awkward first date, I've created a short info-graphic about myself. Basically, it's a few quirky and fun tidbits about me. Enjoy!
Until next time!

Sporting our ISU Gear
Here are a few photos of our recent screen printing project. We created six different designs that were then screen printed onto t-shirts, sweatshirts, and canvas bags. Our lovely photographer, Sarah Jackson, shot us all sporting the ISU gear before giving it away at this year's OIT Start of School tent.

It's that time of year again!
The OIT Start of School tent marks the end of summer and gets us all geared up and ready for the new academic year. Complete with popcorn, snow cones and games, the OIT tent welcomes new students and returning students to campus. Today is the first day of the tent, but as you can see from the photos, "angry trees" is already a hit. Poor Sam. He is going to be taking a beating for the next four days!
Welcome Indiana State University, class of 2015.

A little Recognition
Congrats to our design group for winning an Award of Excellence in the Going Green category at this year's University and College Designers Association (UCDA). The Earth Day graphics were originally created by Neha Jain, a former graduate assistant. Matt Wilson, Sarah Edwardson, and Janine Phelps used the graphics again to create recyclable table tents to promote this year's Earth Day celebration. This was a fun, creative project, that allowed for us to experiment with our screen printing supplies. Here is a little write up on the project and the entry photo to follow.
For the second annual Earth Day celebration at Indiana State University, alternative promotional and printing methods were desired in order to keep the environmental impact at a minimum. The Earth Day planning committee asked our designers to create promotional table tents that would sit on thetables in the University food court/commons area. The idea of screen printing on recycled paper lunch bags not only served as a promotional tool for the Earth Day celebration, but strengthened the overall message of sustainability by in itself, being a recyclable item.
By screen printing in-house, we allowed for zero waste of paper and eliminated the use of our 8-color, large format inkjet printer. Recycled paper lunch bags were used as an alternative to a traditional tri-folded, glossy or matte cover stock table tent. Stones found on campus were used to weigh down the bags and returned once the event was complete. Repurposing the bags by students and staff after the celebration as lunch sacks were encouraged. The minimal waste during the printing process resulted in roughly 15 misprinted bags that were also repurposed as lunch sacks by our designer staff.

Moving On
This week we lose two of our family members here in the Multimedia Design group.
Carley Augustine, our graphic design graduate assistant, has taken a teaching position and is moving to Charleston, SC. We wish her the best of luck. Look for us all to be crashing on your couch soon because, lets face it, who doesn't love Charleston! Here is Carley sporting her new ISU swag made by yours truly.
Veronica McFerson, our student receptionist, is graduating with her bachelor degree. Congratulations Veronica! Veronica has worked for our department for several years now. She will be missed, but we wish her the best of luck in her new career.

August
August marks the end of summer and the start of the Fall semester. Only 3 1/2 more weeks until classes resume and students return to campus. August 19-23 OIT/CIRT will be hosting our annual Start of School tent near the fountain. We will have games, snowcones, popcorn and tech support on staff to help get your new laptop up and running with the latest software. We are giving away a ton of prizes this year, so come on out and join us.

Silkscreening
For the past few months, our crew has been learning to silkscreen. Although we had hoped to be instant experts, we admit that the process is harder than it looks. We are having fun just learning the steps and experimenting. Since the printing is all done by hand, each print is different. We think this gives each print character and uniqueness, something that is hard to achieve on our inkjet or laser printers. We will share some final silkscreen designs soon, but for now, here is a look at the step-by-step process.
